Mr. Burkee is our interim principal. Mr. Burkee graduated from Concordia College in River Forest, Illinois in 1981. He did masters work at Concordia University Wisconsin in Educational Technology. Mr. Burkee has been in Lutheran ministry for 40 years. Thirty six of those forty years were spent a a principal and six years as a teacher. It is interesting to note that the six years spent as a teacher were spent at St. John Lutheran in south St. Louis. Mr. Burkee states that it is almost like coming home by coming back to St. Louis.

Mr. Burkee is married to Cathy Burkee and they have been blessed with six children and five grandchildren. All of their children are married.

Rev. Martin Dressler

Religion Teacher & Pastor

Pastor Martin Dressler grew up in the mountains of NC. He attended Concordia College, NY and Concordia Seminary, MO. For four years he served as pastor of Christ Lutheran Church in Milford, MI before accepting the call to Salem in 2017. Currently, he’s working on a PhD in systematic theology. Pastor and his wife, Justine, have been blessed with three sons, Titus, Jude, and Grey.

Pre-K

Ainge has been in the child development field for 8 years. She was an aide/assistant at Coroline Mission Daycare and Learning center for approximately 2 years. This is her 6th year teaching the Pre-K 3 students at Salem. She is certified in Early Childhood Education from Penn Foster and St. Louis Community College. She loves teaching at Salem and plans to continue for many years. Her goal is to be a positive guide for these children, instilling in them love for others, love for themselves, and most importantly love for Jesus.

Shanese Peters

Kindergarten

Shanese Peters has been in the Early Childhood Education field since 2015. She is certified in Early Childhood Education from St. Louis Community College. She was a Teacher Assistant at Florissant Valley Early Childhood Center and then moved to Normandy Early Childhood Center. She is so excited that God has chosen her to be here with the Kindergarten classes of Salem! She hopes that she can help the children grow in their academics to their fullest potential but most importantly, help strengthen their relationship with God!

Carol Bailey

1st Grade

Carol is a retired teacher from Special School District. She is certified in the areas of Kindergarten – 9th grade, Learning Disabled, Emotion Disturbed and Intellectually Disabled. She was a teacher at River Roads Lutheran School. She is excited to continue what she loves, which is to teach children.

Tonja Cleveland

Tonja Cleveland

2nd Grade

Tonja is a 2000 graduate of Concordia University Wisconsin with a degree in Elementary Education and minor in Environmental Science. She has been in education for 19 years, and 14 of those years have been right here at Salem. She has had the opportunity to teach 2nd grade, 3rd grade, and 4th grade. She really enjoys second grade because she can learn as much from them as they do from her. She feels very blessed to have the opportunity to be here at Salem.

Courtney Harper

3rd Grade

Courtney Harper has been married for 6 years. She has a beautiful daughter named Hailee Harper, who is in Kindergarten here at Salem. She is so excited to be the new third grade teacher! She has been a Children’s Church teacher for 8 years, teaching 7-10 year olds. She considers it an honor to be able to not only teach, but to share the love of God with students every day!

Cynthia Schulz

Cynthia Schulz

4th Grade

Cynthia Schulz grew up in St. Louis City and graduated from Lutheran High School South. She earned her Associates degree from St. Paul’s College, Concordia MO; earned her Bachelors in Education from the University of Central Missouri; and completed the Colloquy program through Concordia University, Chicago. Mrs. Schulz married Mr. Schulz in 1975. They have two married sons, a grandson, and a step granddaughter. She accepted a call to teach at Salem in 2011 and has been teaching full-time in Lutheran schools since 1979. Mrs. Schulz has a lot of fun teaching the fabulous Fourth-graders at Salem and also finds great joy in directing the choir for Grades 1-4 and Salem’s Singing Eagles. She is delighted to have found a faith family among the Saints of Salem!

Cheri Mansfield

Cheri Mansfield

5th Grade

Cheri Mansfield has had the pleasure of being a teacher at Salem for the past 20 years. She graduated from the University of Mo. St. Louis in 1986 and taught P.E. at St. Jeromes and coached High School volleyball at Rosary (Trinity) for 5 years. In her earlier years at Salem, she taught P.E. and coached volleyball at Lutheran North. For the past 11 years, she has been the 5th grade teacher. She also currently serves as the Athletic Director and coaches Volleyball and Track. She has truly enjoyed getting to know both the students and parents at this school, and she is thankful to God for giving her the opportunity to serve at Salem.

Rachel Pena

Rachel Pena

6th Grade

Rachel Pena graduated from University of Missouri at St. Louis with a degree in Elementary Education in 2005. This is her 13th year of teaching. She taught 5 years at Hope Lutheran St. Ann, grades 1-3. She then joined Salem in 2012 to teach 7th grade and middle school Science. In 2016, Ms. Pena taught 6th grade Science in St. Louis City School district. Ms. Pena was happy to return last year to teach 3rd grade. This year she is excited to return to the middle school to teach Science and 7th grade. Her favorite subjects to teach are Science and Math. She is thrilled to begin teaching a STEM/STEAM program as well. She has been a life-long Lutheran and has a daughter, Kaitlyn, and a son, Jonathon, who have graduated from Salem Affton and Lutheran High School South. She also has two stepsons that are 25 and 27. She is anxiously awaiting her second grandbaby to be born this year. Not only does Ms. Pena know the importance of sharing Christ with others, but she loves the family atmosphere of the Lutheran community.

Jessica Potter

7/8th Grade

Mrs. Potter earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Missouri-St Louis and has her Master’s Degree in School Guidance Counseling from Lindenwood University. She has been in the Education field for over 20 years. Mrs. Potter also holds a position teaching in the math department at St. Louis Community College in the evenings. Mrs. Potter is looking forward to an amazing school year and feels blessed to be a part of the family here at Salem Lutheran School.

School Administrative Assistant

Susan Scherer has worked at Salem Lutheran School for 20+ years. She has served in many capacities in those years. Currently she works in the school office. It is a joy to serve her Lord here at Salem.
